World's only dual protection sunscreen

The Safe Sea brand was founded in 1995 by marine scientists and biotechnologists. Extensive research and clinical trials allowed to offer products with unique features, such as protection from jellyfish. Therefore, we are committed to innovation and quality in all of our products.

Our Story

Safe Sea - a true friend of the sea

Friend of the Sea, one of the major international certification scheme for sustainable seafood and aquaculture products, has recently decided to validate Nidaria's long-term commitment towards environmental sustainability by awarding Safe Sea® as Friend of the Sea.

At this moment Safe Sea is world's only sunscreen brand given this award.

“Friend of the Sea" certification can be achieved by other sunscreen brands releasing less than 5% of their chemicals to the water after 80 minutes in the water” comments Paolo Bray, founder and director of Friend of the Sea.

“We really hope other producers will be motivated to reach this goal and that the certification will drive a quick change in the industry towards more sustainable sunscreens”.

Picking

How do Jellyfish sting

When there is contact between a tentacle and human skin, the stinging cells are activated and deploy their needles. Each needle penetrates the skin and injects its venom, generating pain, red marks, and rashes.

A. Stimulants from the skin initiate the discharge process

B. High internal pressure of 200 atmospheres is built in the capsule

C. With 40,000xG of acceleration the needle drills a hole into the skin

D. A tubule follows the shaft and injects the venom into the body

How to use Safe Sea sunscreen

Apply at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun or the first bath.

Spread the sunscreen generously over the whole body. The skin should be completely dry when applying the product. Do not leave any areas unprotected: a jellyfish will discharge its stinging cells with the minimum of contact.

What quantity should be applied?
To evaluate the effectiveness of a sunscreen’s SPF for any individual skin type, it should be tested, by applying 2mg/cm2 of product to the back. A typical adult, 1,70m tall needs approximately 30ml of sunscreen of appropriate SPF to complete body coverage. Less will not provide appropriate solar protection.

To ensure correct application we would recommend following the “7 Teaspoon Rule” created by a dermatologist. This recommends applying a teaspoonful (of Safe Sea) to each of the seven parts of the body (i.e. legs, arms, torso, back & face).

Brilliant Minds

Dr. Amit Lotan, CEO, gained his PhD in Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he worked with United Nations scientists researching jellyfish sting protection.

He established Nidaria (Safe Sea) in 1995 and has worked closely with organizations including the US Navy and Israel’s Ministry of the Environment to test Safe Sea protective products around the world.

His research has been published in leading scientific and medical journals, including Nature.

Since 2007 Amit has been collaborating with multinational companies to provide sunscreen products for enhanced safety at the beach.

Ms. Naomi Dahan, Laboratory Manager, Quality Control and Formulation. Naomi has a BA in Biotechnology and more than ten years’ experience in the formulation and manufacture of sunscreen products.

Under Naomi’s supervision there were developed more than 30 different sunscreen products which are sold worldwide.

Dr. Tamar Lotan, Founder, is a specialist in Developmental Biology at Haifa University’s Marine Biology Department.

Previously, she founded NanoCyte, Inc, a biotech company using marine stinging cells for pharmaceutical drug delivery.

Her research was published in Cell and other leading refereed scientific journals. She has more than 20 patent applications to her name.

Dr Lotan holds BSc and MSc degrees in Biology from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a PhD in Genetics and Biochemistry from The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot.

Prof. Paul Auerbach, MD, MS, Advisor and Stakeholder, is a Clinical Professor of Surgery and Emergency Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center, CA.

Paul is an internationally recognized authority on the clinical management of marine stings. He serves as a national medical consultant on hazardous marine life to numerous medical, recreational and scientific organizations, including the Divers Alert Network.

Mr. Bob Bell, Advisory Board, is the founder of the Banana Boat brand and the man who helped create the sun care industry.

Bob Bell built up the Banana Boat sun care brand from a garage operation to a global giant. Today, Banana Boat is one of the biggest sunscreen brands in the world.
